Kilistra, Konya, Turkey

Kilistra is an ancient city slightly southwest from Iconium and slightly northeast of Lystra. It is located beneath the modern village of Gökyurt, which is built upon a large rock tel. The ancient city of Kilistra consists of many rock-cut houses in the protruding rocks on the tel and the surrounding area. The houses as well as entry stairs
leading up the the tel are visible and can be climbed. Unfortunately, the modern village of Gökyurt
is built right on top of the tel and no excavations have taken
place. The remnants of several cave houses can also be seen throughout
the village. On the foremost part of the tel overlooking the valley, a small church-like structure carved out of one huge rock can be seen. The structure has a cross etched into the wall (probably from the Byzantine period) and what appears to be a baptismal pool.
Kilistra was one of the cities in the area near the King's Road and might have been a place that early church missionaries visited while on their journeys through the area.
